INFANT WELFARE SOCIETY OF CHICAGO

AUXILIARY

We want to thank our Auxiliary Chapters and members who helped with the party either through monetary donations or volunteer work. In particular, we want to acknowledge the Downers Grove Chapter whose members helped to assemble the children’s gift bags. These were filled to the brim with wonderful gifts for the kids including
books, toys, games, stuff ed animals and more – thanks to the eff orts of our two stellar Chairmen, Pat Danly and Elise Klein. This is the first year these two dynamos have chaired the party, and they devoted a huge amount of time to the job.

They began shopping for items for the bags last January in a year-long search for the best gifts at the best prices. Pat credits Elise with having “an eye for a buy,” and says she always managed to find the lowest prices on a certain item and pressed her “sales force” (that would be Pat in particular and other Auxiliary members on occasion) to go
forth and purchase it in bulk. And judging from the children’s reactions as they opened their bags, their efforts were most appreciated. We also want to acknowledge the generous donation of 2,000 Happy Meal toys from McDonald’s Corporation.

We received that contribution thanks to the influence of Hinsdale Chapter member Gail Daly whose husband, Jack, works for the company. A special thank you is sent to our wonderful Auxiliary Coordinator, Maria Penland, who worked very hard to ensure a successful event, as did Luis Rodriguez, Maintenance Engineer. As we’ve come to expect, Luis went well above and beyond the call of duty to assist in whatever ways possible. Luis gives that often-overused phrase “service with a smile” a whole new meaning, and the Auxiliary (and all of IWS for that matter) is
very lucky to have him. Last but not least, the Auxiliary sends its sincere thanks to a truly superb Santa, Mark Danly (Pat’s husband) whose warmth and good humor would put Santa himself to shame. Mark somehow managed to charm even the most reluctant children, and all of them seemed to enjoy spending time with him. In fact, one little girl kept returning to Santa time and time again – perhaps to share an item or two she had omitted from her well-rehearsed holiday wish list. We appreciate Mark’s time and effort.

Each year, it’s fun to see how much the parents themselves enjoy the party – as much as their children in many cases, if not more so. The moms and dads were delighted to receive a photo of their children with Santa -- the perfect addition to their holiday mantles. And at the end of this particular day, it was heartwarming to see how much our IWS families appreciated the Auxiliary’s efforts on their behalf.

Our members can take great pride in the knowledge that the See Santa Party will likely become a lasting and beloved memory for the children at the Clinic. To all those who helped us, A line began to form at the Clinic over an hour thank you for making it possible!
As per tradition on the fi rst Saturday of December, it was bitter cold, snow was falling, and a line of children and their parents began to form before 8:30 a.m. That’s because one hour later, at precisely 9:30 a.m., the doors to the Kaczmarek Community Room opened and children poured in to receive gift bags and have an audience with Santa who reigned supreme on his regal red throne!

From all reports, the Community Room was transformed that day into a veritable winter wonderland with sky blue paper and snowflakes galore. Pat Danly created the decorations that put our partygoers in a festive mood. She handcut and decorated the 20+ giant snowflakes that proved to be the perfect “set decoration” for the event.
