INFANT WELFARE SOCIETY of CHICAGO
Supporting a tradition of visionary care

a legacy of caring

Our Annual Luncheon and Meeting is a time honored “rite of passage” for our Auxiliary Board members. It’s also a great opportunity to reflect on the past year in the company of IWS and Auxiliary friends. This year’s event was held on June 9th at Topaz Café in Burr Ridge.

According to Auxiliary President Rosanne Merrill, FY2010 was a memorable and successful one in many regards. She said how pleased she was that the organization exceeded its $550,000 annual pledge by $80,000. She added that in

these extraordinarily difficult economic times, this is a remarkable achievement. She also enumerated the many accomplishments of the past year, and she invited our members to peruse our first-ever Auxiliary Annual Report that includes her letter detailing our activities as well as our FY09 audited financial statements.

Rosanne also acknowledged the contributions of her Executive Board and highlighted the outstanding work of outgoing Board Members, First Vice President Elise Klein, Treasurer Polly Pierce and Recording Secretary Pat Danly. She also welcomed incoming Board Members, Julia Wade of the Hinsdale Juniors Chapter and Melissa Staab and Anne Malcolm, both of the Clarendon Hills Chapter.

At our meeting, representatives of the North Shore Chapter honored the memory of fellow member, Sue Aspen, with a plaque and painting entitled “Nighttime Still Life” that will be placed in a position of prominence at the Clinic. Sue’s husband, the Honorable Marvin Aspen, and her daughter, Jessica Aspen Traxler, were in attendance at the luncheon. Rosanne noted that Sue’s tenure with the Auxiliary was a long and distinguished one. She served as President of the former Glencoe Wings Chapter and was an active member of the North Shore Chapter. Sue also served with distinction as a member of the organization’s Executive Board and was instrumental in forming important corporate and business partnerships for IWS. North Shore Chapter President Elise Klein said that Sue was the personification of grace and elegance, and she recited the wording on the memorial plaque that reads in part, “In our hearts, she will bloom forever.” At the conclusion of the presentation, Judge Aspen said how touched he and his children were with the memorial, and he said how

appropriate the subject matter was to his late wife who was a phenomenal gardener. Certainly, Sue will be remembered by her many friends in the Auxiliary with love and thanks.

In other matters, Rosanne also announced that the Auxiliary Board had approved a new logo for the organization. Given our fundraising eff orts and focus solely on behalf of IWS, it was unanimously decided at our  May Board meeting that we will adopt the same logo as the Infant Welfare Society, that is, the mother/infant image reflective of the Clinic’s care for Chicago’s women and

children in need.

At the close of the Annual Meeting, Rosanne expressed her appreciation to the entire membership for its stellar efforts this past year. She said that the Auxiliary continues to distinguish itself as the Clinic’s preeminent fundraiser and “friendraiser” year in and year out. Rosanne congratulated everyone on jobs

well done, and she wished our members a wonderful summer vacation.
